Only those who work on becoming released from an addiction know and understand how tough it is to do that. Addictions are from spiritual/emotional/paychological/spiritual wounds that cannot seem to be healed.
The answer is not to address the effects of the "infection" of those wounds in the present. We must release the desire to treat the wounds ourselves, but give them and everything else up to God so that The Lord will deliver us with God's help at the root causes of that woundedness in the past. This can be accomplished when we begin to allow rhe Holy Spirit to come to is and open the door to our psyche. When we take each step on a spiritual level, the Lord can bring us to a higher plain of consciousness where the past/presnt/future is available. With the help of the Holy Spirit our wounds CAN BE HEALED.
This is what is meant in Psalm 23 and elsewhere in Holy Scriptures where it is written: "He restores my soul."
